This is a beautiful piece of glass. The pattern was made by Hobbs, Brockunier & Co. Glass of South Wheeling, W VA circa 1870 and is also known as "Messereau Blackberry". The pattern was patented on February 1, 1870 by John Hobbs. It was made in crystal and porcelain (opal), as milk glass was called in those days. This clear glass covered compote is 9-1/2" tall to the top of the blackberry finial and 7-1/4" in diameter at the milled rim. The foot is 4" in diameter and shows a good deal of honest wear. This compote has a "milled" rim on both the bowl and the lid. The pattern is very sharp and clear. The conical standard and the base are also very clear glass and are attached to the bowl with a wafer. The inside of the bowl at the rim, t is a very small flake. The lid feel a little rough in a few places but t are no chips, flakes or cracks on this beautiful piece 19th century glass ware. You may, however see a few bubbles. This pattern is more rarely seen in clear glass than in the milk white or opal. Publ.Date : Mon, 08 Sep 2008 13:26:23 +0000
